I will admit that since getting out of traditional school where we had assemblies with flags, & speakers, and veterans… I don’t think about the real meaning of Memorial Day anymore… or several other holidays for that matter.
Memorial Day.. and I’ve forgotten.
I try to bring Christ into Easter & Christmas, so the kids don’t think it’s “all about the goodies”. I write letters from Santa and print the picture of Santa kneeling at the creche, and have Santa’s story about the best gift given to the world along side the “I’m glad you were a good girl this year”. For Easter I bring up the subject with new Bible story books, bookmarks, etc.
I wear red, white, & blue and “Proud to be an American” shirts for 4th of July… but past that I don’t think about the revolution this country went through and the freedom that was fought so hard for to ensure that my children and I don’t have to fight for it today.
Labor Day, yeah I remember that one. No work for traditional employees! And that is the correct meaning of that one. But as a Mom & Wife, that is another day they’re ALL home ALL day dirtying my house LOL! I don’t get the day off for that one at all!
Any other holiday? Forget it. I can’t even pull it off my head to discuss, much less think of the true meaning.
I find it a little disheartening and I’m ashamed that I don’t think more about the big ones, where people have died so that I may have the life I have today.
