I think this book would be awesome for someone that is looking for basic understanding of the things the book covers which includes preparing for the procedure, what to expect during a planned and emergency c-section, deciding if a c-section is best, breastfeeding after, possible complications, and tips on recovering.

It seems well suited for women that want to prepare for the possibility of a c-section, for those trying to decide if a c-section is right for them giving good ideas for things to discuss with doctor, and for those wanting information about VBACs (vaginal births after Cesarean). However, reading it from a perspective of someone that is having a medically necessary c-section (and is OK with it which is a very important thing) it left a lot to be desired.

Things I really liked:

  • The format was very simple, it was a very easy book to read and organized well.
  • I was very impressed that the author comes out and says in the first few pages that there is no one right away for a baby to be born. She presents information, stats, and data and leaves the rest to the reader. She repeatedly states either directly or indirectly through the book that there is no reason to feel guilty or like a failure if you have a c-section, but addresses those feelings and ways to cope.
  • I also greatly appreciated the section on breastfeeding after a c-section. I’ve read all over about the difficulties of breastfeeding after and actually very little empowering information. The section on breastfeeding in this book left me with the feeling that I CAN do it.
  • It does have a lot of good information in it, and I found quite a few things that were note-worthy, and things I plan on discussing with my doctor.

Things I think could be improved:

  • I would have really liked a section on writing up a birth plan for c-section, and more information about options available for a planned c-section/planning a c-section.

Wrap up:

All-in-all as the front cover states “Must reading for all pregnant women” it is a book worth reading especially for first time moms whether you’re planning to have a c-section or not.

Knowledge is power and I’m glad I have the information this book provided, and feel a little more prepared thanks to Rita Rubin. I plan to pack it in my hospital bag and use it as a reference/resource as needed.
