To this day I still laugh when I think about our mad rush to get to the hospital.
I remember it clearly. We had finally finished all our baby shopping and had decided to head out to lunch. Throughout the day I remember feeling what I thought were Braxton Hicks contractions. As the day progressed, the “contractions” got closer and closer so we joked that all was well because we had all the shopping done. (Of course, nothing was put together yet…)
So I’m chatting with my sister via Skype that evening, and as we’re timing the contractions, she’s laughing while telling me that I better go get everything ready because the baby is on it’s way. Surely our little one wouldn’t be in a rush. I had two more weeks until my due date… Well apparently I was wrong.
In a flash, my water broke and all chaos ensued. All I could think about was the fact that my bag wasn’t packed!! As I rushed around the house grabbing this and that, I swore under my breath for procrastinating on making my list.
Today, that minor little thing was really nothing, but save yourself the headache of doing it last minute and if you’ve been procrastinating up until now, go pack your bag!
Here’s a quick list to get you started:
- Two or more pillows with pillowcases
- Toiletries for you and anyone else staying in the room with you
- Slippers, flipflops, nightgown(s), bathrobe
- Going home clothes for you and the baby
- Maternity/Nursing bras
- Nursing pads
- Breastfeeding pillow
- Sanitary napkins
- Underwear for after delivery
- Lip balm
- Books, laptop, cards, etc.
- Music (CDs, MP3 player, etc.)
- Scrapbook
- Notepad and pen
- Baby book
- Baby clothes

The day after birth if you are well enough I was really glad I brought some makeup and managed to do my hair and makeup because there will be a LOT of visitors and tons of cameras flashing in your face:)
